The three large square patterns in the corners of every QR code are called Finder Patterns. They are always 7×7 modules and contain a specific ratio of black-to-white that scanner algorithms recognize instantly from any angle or distance. These are what allow your smartphone camera to detect that it's looking at a QR code even before it reads the data.

🛡️ Error Correction — How Damaged Codes Still Scan +

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction — the same mathematics used in CDs and deep-space probes. Depending on the error correction level you choose:

L (Low) — 7% damage recovery. Best for clean digital screens.
M (Medium) — 15% recovery. Best for printed materials.
Q (Quartile) — 25% recovery. Ideal for outdoor billboards.
H (High) — 30% recovery. Required when embedding a logo, as the logo physically covers data modules.

📊 Data Capacity — How Much Can a QR Hold? +

QR code data capacity depends on content type and error correction level:

Numeric only: up to 7,089 digits
Alphanumeric: up to 4,296 characters
Binary / URL: up to 2,953 bytes
Kanji characters: up to 1,817 characters

Higher error correction reduces capacity because more redundant data is added. Keep URLs short (use a URL shortener) for denser, faster-scanning codes.

⬜ Quiet Zone — Why White Space Matters +

The Quiet Zone is the blank white border surrounding the QR code. The ISO standard requires a minimum of 4 module widths of quiet zone on all four sides. Without it, scanner algorithms cannot reliably detect the code boundaries — especially when printed on colored backgrounds or placed near other graphics. Always maintain this border when printing or embedding QR codes.
